  1. Can Manchester become a Cycling City? Yes of course it can. Is it going to under the current network plans? Unless there is something more to this than meets the eye, no.

    Why not?

    The five main requirements for bicycle-friendly infrastructures as identified by CROW are as follows:

    > Improved traffic safety;
    > Directness: short, fast routes from origin to destination;
    > Comfort: good surfaces, generous space and little hindrance from other road users;
    > Attractiveness: a pleasant, socially safe environment, without smell or noise nuisance;
    > Cohesion: logical, cohesive routes

    Routes which are direct and which cohere are necessary prerequisites of a Cycling City, and must be identified during the planning stage. The current network plans fall at the first hurdle, therefore.
