Freezing February Critical Mass

Despite the cold and dark, February's Critical Mass turned out to be really special. Many of the key people who help guide the mass were not present, often a sign of problems, but not this time. The mass took a while to get into rhythm, but today it was definitely gentle. The ride held together well, and a collective responsibility emerged. Several fast riders circulated around the mass taking the role of plugging side roads and even oncoming traffic with skill and good humour. Overall this was one of the most empowering Critical Mass rides I have taken part in. People really looked out for each other, even to the point of dropping off the ride to help with breakdowns and bumps.

Two sound systems were out on the ride, and my camera decided it was going to play up yet again, so some of these were taken blind....

As the cold began to sap people's energy we headed over to Popup Bikes where there was a photo exhibition and book launch.

It was a wonderful way to end the ride and chat and warm up with good company.

Thanks to all who made this ride special.

August Critical Mass

Bit damp this month, most people were wearing coats or waterproofs, and apart from this photo at the start my camera stayed in a dry pocket.

However, the mood was surprisingly good despite the disappointing weather.

For everyone who came up and asked what the music was - it was an all female line up of voices, mostly remixed. As far as I can remember the tracks were...

Three from Mari Boine's album Idjagieas, including Vuoi Vuoi Mu. Two from Martyn Bennett's final album, Grit. Move sung by Sheila Stewart and Nae Regrets featuring the voices of Annie Watkins and Edith Piaf. Three from Peggy Seeger off the Broadcaster album Folksploitation - take a look at the video for First Time Ever. Tom's Diner by DNA featuring Suzanne Vega off Tom's Album and a couple off Mari Boine's Remixed album.

Then the song I got asked about several times was Bonny Bunch of Roses off Ragged Kingdom by June Tabor and the Oysterband followed by Barbara Dickson, Witch of the Westmerlands off Time & Tide.
